INTRODUCTION

According to Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria; the place of nursing in the health care system is getting more and more complex. Nursing roles are expanding in leeps and bounds and we are taking on more responsibilities that require critical thinking skills. The nurse is expected to maintain professional competence in an environment of numerous challenges, rapid organizational changes, information technology, increasing public expectations and demand for quality and greater accountability. They are expected to be adaptive, flexible, innovative, resourceful, responsible and self reliant. These expectations are only achievable through continuing professional development programmes which encourage nurses to apply learning directly to their field of practice.

In light of these, the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria initiated Mandatory Continuing Professional Development Programme for Nurses across the Nation. This is aimed at assisting nurses in the continued acquisition of new knowledge, extension of professional responsibilities, expansion of personal skills and the improvement of problem solving approaches in professional practice.

BROAD OBJECTIVES OF THE PROGRAMME: Specifically the programme aims to:

  1. Assist nurses in appreciating advancement in nursing practice.
  2. Understand the dynamics of challenges in the profession.
  3. Provide opportunity to meet the changing needs of consumers.                 EVD ScreeningProcedure
  4. Ensure continued relevance of nurses in health care system.
  5. Provide advocacy for clients and uphold human right issues.

PROGRAMME DURATION: The programme is didactic and lasts for five days.

  • Advancing Nursing practice to meet the dynamic health need of FCT populace.
  • Constantly sharpen knowledge and skills in nursing practice through continuing education on modern trends in health issues, thereby ensuring quality care delivery.
  • Keep nurses abreast with the modern trends in nursing practice.

    Provide opportunities/zeal for career advancement.

    Provide an avenue for nursing research through career networking.

    Bridge the gap between theory and practice to ensure consistent delivery of quality nursing care all over FCT Abuja.
